We have seperated our trash. We are recycling. We use the plastic storage totes, one goes next to the trash can, three in the garage. Once the one in the house is full, we take it to the garage and seperate into paper, plastic, and cans. We have reduced our need for trash cans. We used to have three cans every week, we are now down to one. It is easy to do, just takes a little more effort.

Recycling really becomes a “no-brainer” when you pre-sort as you toss. Our kitchen has 5 small “trash” bins:
1) recycling (in Denver the curbside recycling accepts metal, plastic and paper all mixed together, so we don’t have to separate that stuff)
2) plastic bags (curbside won’t take them but Whole Foods will)
3) garden compost (veggie scraps and other easily compostable stuff)
4) municipal compost (egg shells, oily stuff, meat scraps and other stuff that’s better composted by a commercial outfit)
5) actual trash (this is the smallest one and it’s only filled up about once a month)
It took a little bit of creative orgainizing to find a system of shelves etc. to put all of the separate bins, but it makes it MUCH easier!
