I am still amazed to see how many people consider themselves “green”in San Diego and keep using a dryer instead of hanging their laundry outside on a clothes line. Such a waste of energy! In Southern California, it only takes a couple of hours to get fresh dry laundry, smooth and ready to be put away in a closet. A dryer destroys your garments, make you use more artificial products and consumes a lot of electricity. A cloth line is basically free! Please next time you are ready to use a dryer think about my post.

I agree. I gave up my drier over a year ago. Even here in Denver there are plenty of warm days in the winter to hang out laundry. I love the excuse to be outside, and my clothes feel so much nicer. I do confess though, that I did use it once last month when my new kitten peed all over the bed and I had to wash all of the bedding in the middle of a 3 day rainstorm!

I gave up the air conditioner a long time ago. On very hot nights, I find a damp towel cools down a body very well, memories of my childhood in Australia where no one had air conditioning and survived very well. Daily showers and shampoos are a manufactured need by cosmetic companies. Only people who sweat excessively need that. When I run the shower, I keep a bucket there which fills while waiting for the water to run hot – use for garden, plants or any clean water needs. I travel with a damp cloth on my neck when driving in my ‘smart’ car. I take public transport whenever possible or walk. Everything that comes into my house is reused or sent on to schools, street people, charity stores, shelters (toys, clothes). Our garbage output is very very low. Shopping 2nd hand stores is an adventure, you never know what unusual treasure you will find. Its amazing what people discard. Luckily our city recycles many items, until then, I took my children to recycling depots for 30 years. So glad its catching on at last!
