Drinking tap instead of bottled water (filtered, if necessary) saves money, curbs the privatization of water, and keeps plastic bottles out of our landfills. Also eliminates the resources (like oil) used in making plastic bottles, and the energy spent in transporting plastic bottles filled with water.
we have been doing this for quite some time. using a filter(we like brita) makes our tap water taste better than most of the bottled types anyway. we reuse large gatorade bottles to mix drinks in, like crystal light. after a few weeks, it goes in the recycling and we get another. it’s easily transportable to work, on a picnic, anywhere!

Almost all tap water is purer than bottled water. Your municipality can provide the status of your water.
For the first commenter, use glass containers for storing liquids. Plastic off-gases as it breaks down, and the toxins go into the liquid stored. Contact Sierra Club or a local environmental group for details.

what about folks whose water is contaminated?

you need to filter, tap water has not only flouride but toxins, acids, chemicals, chlorine, drugs, and other nasties.

I found out that I proably don’t even need to purify my water and I definitely don’t need to buy bottled and harm the environment. You can find out how your water quality is too:
